Special Edition Box Update + Photos
I've been asked so many questions about the Special Edition Box since it was announced, and even more in the last few weeks.
As some of you already know, I've been stalling while trying to find a way around a huge roadblock: The box is flipping huge. Regardless of how little it weighs, the physical dimensions make it very expensive to ship. To make matters worse, COVID has jacked up prices everywhere.
I've exhausted every available avenue. At the volume we're printing at, there is just no way we can get it to you at a reasonable price.
To give you an idea, the absolute cheapest price I've been able to find is $55 USD shipping to the USA (other countries are even higher). That is an insane amount of money to pay no matter how much you love Mothership (and that is in addition to the price of the box).
So that means...the Special Edition Box will have to be shelved...for now.
I'm sorry for dangling it in front of you for so long!
But, does that mean you will never have an opportunity ever again to get the entire game in one box with fancy trays? Well...not necessarily...
The Future of Mothership
I've been working on the same game since about 2015. That's a long time to spend on one project. Of course, one reason for this is the incredible love and support of you wonderful people. For now, though, I need a break. But what about future expansions, boxes, apps...3rd edition?
As of right now, I have no plans to personally helm a 3rd edition. But, I have been in talks with a publisher. I generally don't like mentioning future plans that aren't set in stone, but there is a promising chance that Mothership could continue to have a life beyond the 2nd Edition.
I've also learnt to never say never! 😅 The last time I said I was completely done it came back to haunt me...so maybe after a break, I could get back into developing the game further. Either way, if there is any news, you will be the first to know! Stay tuned 😉
Photos of the Box you can't Order
The Special Edition Box was so far ahead in development that it was completely finished! On the outside of the base, it included some amazing artwork by my wife Alkira: a full panorama that wrapped around the entire box.
I will continue to keep an eye open for any way to get this printed and shipped cheaply, but for now, we just have photos.
